स्वविषयासंप्रयोगे चित्तस्य स्वरूपानुकारैवेन्द्रियाणां प्रत्याहारः ॥५४॥
svaviṣaya-asaṁprayoge cittasya svarūpānukāra-iv-endriyāṇāṁ pratyāhāraḥ ||54||
[SS] 2.54 When the senses withdraw themselves from the objects and imitate, as it were, the nature of the mind-stuff, this is pratyahara. [p165]
[EB] 2.54 Pratyahara, withdrawal from sense objects, occurs when the senses do not come into contact with their respective sense objects. It corresponds, as it were, to the nature of the mind [when it is withdrawn from the sense objects]. [p297]
(स्व, sva) = their own
(विषय, viṣaya) = object; thing
(अ, a) = not
(संप्रयोगे, saṁprayoge) = to come into contact with; to unite; to become one
(चित्तस्य, cittasya) = all that is mutable in humankind; mind
(स्व, sva) = their own
(रूप, rūpa) = form
(स्वरूप, svarūpa) = own form; own nature
(अनुकार, anukāra) = to imitate; to resemble; to appropriate
(एव, eva) = ike; as though; as it were
(इन्द्रियाणाम्, indriyāṇām) = via the senses; via the sense organs
(प्रत्याहारः, pratyāhāraḥ) = withdrawal of the senses; bringing inward; literally: fast with the senses; harmony with the emotions; harmony with the emotional body
