yogaś-citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ ||2||
[JW] 1.2 Yoga is the restriction of the fluctuations of mind stuff.
[SS] 1.2 The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga. [p3]
[TD] 1.2 Yoga is the ability to direct the mind exclusively toward an object and sustain that direction without any distractions. [p149]
[EB] 1.2 Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind. [p10]
JHT: RS is again more interpretive. JW has a long 5 pages of commentary and explanation.
The modifications are restrained, not eliminated.
Is there unmodified mind-stuff?
How is the mind-stuff different than the mind?
There are thoughts (citta) and then modifications (vrtti), is there an unmodified state of thoughts?
